What makes doTERRA Sun different?

First, each of doTERRA Sun’s products are good for all skin types. The formulas are nourishing, antioxidant-rich, and hydrating. They also leave minimal residue, so they accommodate all skin tones!

What’s the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreens?

All of doTERRA’s sun protecting products are mineral sunscreens. Mineral sunscreens reflect UV rays. They serve as a physical barrier and reflect UV rays for broad-spectrum protection. Plus they don’t degrade when exposed to UV rays. And since they act like a physical barrier, they’re effective immediately. 

Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and typically require at least 20 minutes for the ingredients to be effective. They’re are designed to absorb UV rays. Some active ingredients from chemical sunscreens have been found hanging out in wearer’s bloodstream long after they’ve left the sun! Some active ingredients in chemical sun screen can also act as hormone disruptors and cause skin allergies or other concerns. 

What is SPF and why is it important?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It tells you how much longer your skin is protected relative to if you weren’t wearing any sunscreen at all. For example, if you put on an SPF 30 product properly, it’d take you 30 times longer to burn compared to if you weren’t wearing any sunscreen. SPF 30 products give you around 97% protection with proper use. Many sunscreens don’t offer the sun protection claimed on the labels (especially when the user goes into the water) which is why doTERRA Sun completed rigorous testing before hitting the market. So you can feel confident you’re protecting your skin (and your kids’ skin).

What does Broad Spectrum mean?

Broad spectrum refers to the types of UV rays the sunscreen protects against: UVA and UVB.
All of doTERRA Sun’s suncare products are broad spectrum. 

Do doTERRA Sun products contain essential oils?

Of course! doTERRA’s Certified Pure Tested Grade® essential oils are in each of the doTERRA Sun products. The SPF products include Red Mandarin, Magnolia, Lemongrass, Ylang Ylang, Carrot Seed, Frankincense, and Helichrysum essential oils, along with coconut CO2 extract. 

This aromatic blend leverages the properties of our most effective skin-benefiting essential oils. You may be wondering why we added Red Mandarin, seeing as it’s a citrus oil. Unlike other citrus oils—which you generally shouldn’t apply topically before spending time in the sun—Red Mandarin contains significantly lower levels of a constituent (furocoumarins) that causes photosensitivity. And because it’s diluted in the sunscreen products, it doesn’t cause photosensitivity, according to guidelines recommended by industry organizations.
