Never Too Old: How To Stay Fit in Your 40s and 50s

Midlife crisis.

Oops, did I just say that aloud?!

No no, I’m not having one….heck no. I’m like a spring chicken over here!

But a lot of my lady friends and clients in their 40s and 50s are feeling it...maybe you are too? Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.

Maybe it’s not so much a “crisis”… as a wake-up call that you need to take care of yourself a little differently once you hit the big four oh, and then the big five oh.

Staying fit and healthy into your 40s, 50s and beyond takes a little more work than it did in your 30s and you know what...that’s okay.

I actually love the challenge. Because really, when it comes down to it, age really is just a number.

It’s all about how you feel, in your mind and your bod.

For a lot of you amazing mamas out there, hitting your 40s can be the most challenging decade — you may have young kids or kids that are hitting their teens...

Or you may have unknowingly adopted some bad health habits in your 30s….

Maybe you love your glass of wine so much at the end of the day, it turns into two...OR  maybe you’ve succumbed to the glowing screen of your laptop and netflix every night...

Or maybe you’re freaking it killing it right now and you’re like, Hayley - SHUSH!

Okay okay, I’ve just seen it too many times in my clients.

As a certified health coach, it’s my job and a duty I take very seriously — to help you consciously live your healthiest life.

Let’s talk about se….stress, baby 🎵

You may have kids….aging parents….a business or career that’s in the midst of delicious insanity because all your hard work is finally paying off — and you are busaaaay.

This shiz can cause major stress if you’re not careful (but also tons of joy, empowerment and all the warm fuzzy feelings if you do it right…).

It’s easy to get caught up in it all. And if you don’t slot self-care into your busy schedule, it can start wreaking havoc in your bod and your brain.

Stress causes inflammation and a whole lot of other probs.

So when it comes to the “S” word, you gotta nip it in the bud.

Meditate.

Read a book.

Take a yoga class.

Hop in the sauna.

Lay in the grass.

Whatever you can do to breathe deeper, find a state of calm (even in the storm), and center yourself...is going to save you.

Make a list of activities you love that give you a sense of peace and try to do at least one of them every single day.

And if work is INSANE, learn how to delegate and time block.

One thing you can do all day erry day is BREATHE. Do it. Right now. Take a deep breath, pause at the top and then slowly exhale.

Feel better? Me too.

It’s time to get active

Okay chicas, it’s time to get motivated!

Because fitness in your 40s and 50s is hella important.

I work out every single day, no matter what.

Yah yah, you’re all like….

But for real, I live for my morning workouts because they set me up for the day.

Starting your day with getting sweaty and boosting your heart rate can give you long lasting energy, so you can be the best mom and/or the best biz lady you can be.

Even just going for a daily walk will make a huge difference.

It’s all about the little things

Managing stress, working out and eating healthy are the biggest things you can do to impact your health now so you can make it to your 70s, 80s and beyond.

Making little changes can make for big results.

Sitting is the new smoking so maybe try a stand-up desk if your work has you in a chair all day.

Drink more water (and probiotic drinks).

Limit your screen time (especially before bed).

Try something new.

The last one is underrated. Trying a new sport or activity later on in life can improve your mental AND physical health.

We’re never too old to try something new.

Just because you’re 42 doesn’t mean you can’t try rock climbing...or hockey...or aerial silks.

What have you always wanted to try? Go for it!

Staying healthy, no matter what age you are, shouldn’t feel like a chore.

Whatever you can do to spice things up and adapt to your likes and passions will make it that much easier.

Seriously, what have you always wanted to try and have never done? Let me know in the comments!
Let’s inspire each other to take some action. Muah!

Among all of your other talents, you're now a mind reader! I totally needed this blog today. I'm feelin it. Bought a dang fit bit, like I need to know all about myself...ugh. I'm challenging myself to up my steps each week. I'm doing a lot of trial and error to find the oils that work the best for me in menopause. Copaiba each day and Frank seem to help the hot flashes! Staying fit is soooo much more challenging without estrogen! Love you!
